Pocahontas the musical

Based on the true story of the Indian princess Pocahontas and explorer John Smith, Backstage Productions is bringing out the new family musical "Pocahontas the musical. An interplay of music, dance and theater that tells the wonderful story of 2 people who, despite their differences, fall in love and will do anything to make love win.

Challenge

A family musical must be able to take both young and old completely into a story. In doing so, the set must be maximally dynamic so that the whole picture is right for every scene.

Result

We installed a large LED wall that conveniently blended with the additional set elements that were added throughout the show. By using a ledwall, you can easily create different scenes with video footage. To give extra depth we worked with 3D visuals. For the development of all video content we could rely on the skills of Bart Tauwenberg, video programming was done by Arthur Claesen. Lighting design was in the capable hands of Jeroen Opsteyn and light programming was done by Stijn Vanholzaets. Everything came together thanks to the direction of Floris Devooght.

Arthur Claesen Arthur Claesen has been working at Painting with Light for 4 years now and is a real jack-of-all-trades, or as he so beautifully describes it: an all-round wizard. And that is completely justified if you take on the role of visual designer one project, the other digital media operator and the next project manager. Whether it's light or video, it actually feels at home in all PWL areas. And that's not surprising. Because every day is different and the variety of projects he gets to work on, make it so exciting for him. The best thing about the job is the special vibes and thrills of the sector. He describes himself as a calm person, stress resistant and helpful. Characteristics that are of course very useful on the road. Which project will he always remember? The Studio 100 musical '40-'45 for which he both produced content and did video programming. “It was an unprecedented and groundbreaking concept, so there were quite a few hurdles to overcome. But all's well that ends well!"
Jeroen Opsteyn Jeroen is a busy man, who has been giving his all as a light programmer and designer at Painting with Light for the last 6 years. Every day, he tries to come up with a new show in a creative way. He really is an ambiance creator who is quick and adept at programming shows. He enjoys the satisfaction of seeing everything come together during the first show after an intense start-up, and the positive reactions from the audience. As a loyal team player, giving away house secrets is not his thing: after all, what happens on tour ... He has particularly find memories of The Bodyguard, his first ‘big’ musical project at Painting with Light. It cost him six weeks of blood, sweat, and tears, but the result was a definite hit.
Stijn Vanholzaets Stijn has been working at Painting with Light since early 2023 and feels like a fish in the water behind his lighting table. He learned the tricks of the trade when he was only 14 years old. He sees problems as a challenge and always works in an organised way. Working together with colleagues and artists gives him a lot of energy. Cold feet before a big show? No way, Stijn always manages to keep calm. He already gained worldwide experience and sometimes dreams back of the big arena show of Jungle 2022 in Mexico City.
