Painting with light adds extra sparkle to showbizz content

The Cooke & Verhulst Show is a daily late-night talk show on Play4, a Flemish commercial television channel. James Cooke and Gert Verhulst are presenters. Each episode lasts about an hour. Topical subjects are discussed in a light-hearted manner, show business news is reported, stunts are regularly performed, and there is always time for live music.

Challenge

One important aspect of the talk show is its high showbiz content and great entertainment factor. The show is broadcast from the imposing Studio 2 television studio in Schelle and the setting could do with some bells and whistles. You can take the latter quite literally because a fixed part of the show is a live orchestra. They musically tie each item together and also accompany guest artists during their performance. At the request of production company Dedsit, the esteemed colleagues of set designer Deusjevoo were invited to have fun on the set. And they did a terrific job by creating a large stage for the live band and an impressive central table for all the guests. The decor looks warm and American with countless skylines, a shiny show floor, and lots of gold, glitter, and glamour.

There’s no business like talk-show business!

Result

When PWL was asked to take care of the lighting, we were all too happy to pull out all the stops! Our showmen Luc Peumans, Jeroen Opsteyn, and Werner Dries started off by drawing up a wonderful lighting concept with numerous eye-catchers, such as, a skyline of lights in the shape of an apartment building. We fitted the massive walls with 1,001 light bulbs and also supplied and installed all of the LED lighting in the decor. Producing a daily talk show with so much variety is a complex task that requires a well-oiled machine. To capture all the elements properly, you need - in addition to eleven cameras - an ingenious lighting plan. So, we took care of all the lighting schemes, the technical designs, a seamless integration of visualisations, the lighting design of the show and the set, the lighting programming, and finally also the complete build and system integration. And James and Gert? They 'glitter' with pride every evening!

Luc Peumans As a child, Luc was already fascinated by light and technology, which inspired him to study engineering alongside his musical hobbies. His passion for light took off when he became a member of the Symbolica dance theatre. During his studies, he gained his first work experience as a light technician, designer and operator for national and international concerts and shows. This was the seed for the establishment of Painting with Light in 1999. Luc is a creative perfectionist who will never shy away from a challenge. He cherishes time with his two children Sam and Bo, and he also likes being on a golf course. He cites the “Clouseau in het Lang” concert from 2005 and the 2018 musical project ‘40-‘45 as memorable challenges, that succeeded thanks to groundbreaking and enthusiastic teamwork. Should we even mention that he is proud as punch of his team?
Jeroen Opsteyn Jeroen is a busy man, who has been giving his all as a light programmer and designer at Painting with Light for the last 6 years. Every day, he tries to come up with a new show in a creative way. He really is an ambiance creator who is quick and adept at programming shows. He enjoys the satisfaction of seeing everything come together during the first show after an intense start-up, and the positive reactions from the audience. As a loyal team player, giving away house secrets is not his thing: after all, what happens on tour ... He has particularly find memories of The Bodyguard, his first ‘big’ musical project at Painting with Light. It cost him six weeks of blood, sweat, and tears, but the result was a definite hit.
Werner Dries Light has almost no secrets left for Werner - he has been an operating designer for 30 years. Or should it be designing operator? Whatever is on his schedule, he reckons every working day looks good. Even more so if television work is involved, as that is where he excels, according to his colleagues. Is there a show horse hiding inside him perhaps? He cites creativity and diversity as the nicest aspects of his work. He would describe himself as experienced (that’s lucky, so would we), cheerful, and professional. He loves all kinds of projects, because in his own words: “I love my job”.
Sieben Vannuffelen Sieben arrived at Painting with Light on a summer breeze halfway through 2021. He is our newest light programmer and operator. Although ‘new’ is not the right word, because he completed his internship with us. He already feels right at home in our main office. He will be lighting both fixed installations and shows (musicals, concerts, TV shows, etc.). His first project was the musical Daens, which he thoroughly enjoyed being part of. He has a positive attitude, will stubbornly carry on until a problem is resolved, and has the necessary resilience to stress. He says his best experience up to now is the Clouseau concerts, which he helped prepare during his internship.
