Schlagerfestival 2021: a beautiful 15th festive edition

The Schlagerfestival is an annual popular music festival in the Trixxo Arena in Hasselt. There are mainly Dutch schlager singers performing with sing-along classics and popular life songs. It started in 2006 and so this 15th festival at the end of October 2021 was an anniversary edition for many to look forward to.

Challenge

The mecca of the schlagers is always one big folk festival with tens of thousands of fans of all ages and from all corners of Flanders and the Netherlands. PWL has been present several times and this time also received a nice invitation from PSE Belgium for the Schlagerfestival. To dance the polonaise during Willy Sommers, Jan Smit or The Romeos? No, but to take on the set and stage design and to lead the programming of light and video in the right direction. For this gala edition, a step was taken up a notch with a central stage with the large live band underneath and with numerous walkways to all corners of the venue.

Result

We installed a large LED video cube of 7x7m above the stage and some smaller cubes of 2x2m in the hall so that no one had to miss a glimpse of the stars. Masses of confetti and fireworks provided extra spectacle. With a sophisticated lighting, we ensured that every song came into its own. Menno Broere was present as video content artist, Jo Segers signed for the mood board, Katleen Selleslagh and Toon Raskin as video programmers and Jeroen Opsteyn and Werner Dries were responsible for the light programming. It was also nice that we could count on our buddies from PRG Belgium and PIXELSCREEN.eu. That mix created a unique, mega cozy atmosphere. PWL always put all performing artists and dancers in the spotlight. The audience sang along loud and enthusiastically swung the napkins around. The show had been postponed a year earlier due to corona and for the first time since the lockdown of 13 March 2020, a large audience was present again. And whether that felt good for everyone! So it was another direct hit and we are already looking forward to next year to join in again.
